Facial acne besides affecting the physical appearance of the individual has a deep emotional and psychological effect on the person. People with acne say that their skin makes them feel unattractive, embarrassed, or self-conscious thereby hampering their self-confidence.

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your skin follicles become plugged with oil, dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells. It can cause whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Facial acne is one of the most common skin problems in today’s generation owing to lifestyle changes. Read on to know more about the causes, myths and treatment of facial acne.

Clogged pores/ follicles are the primary reason for acne build up on the face. This triggers inflammation in the skin, in the form of pain and swelling. The pores can get clogged due to-

  • BACTERIA- A certain amount of bacteria is always present on the skin. Increase in this bacteria can clog pores thereby leading to pimples.
  • SEBUM- Sebum is a natural, oily, waxy substance produced by the body’s sebaceous glands. It coats, moisturizes, and protects your skin but excess sebum can cause pimples and acne.
  • DEAD SKIN CELLS- Dead skin shredding is a normal phenomena wherein the skin refreshes itself overtime but continuous increasing build up affects the skin tone and can cause acne to pop up.

  • Myth: Eating chocolate and greasy foods causes acne.

Fact: There is no proven connection between chocolate, pizza, potato chips, cheeseburgers, other fast food and acne outbreaks. One should generally avoid eating such food due to its poor nutritional value to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  • Myth: Acne will go away on its own.

Fact: Acne typically does not resolve on its own. Without treatment, acne can often progress and worsen. Clinical or herbal treatment is necessary for a permanent fix to this problem.

  • Myth: Only teenagers suffer from acne

Fact: Hormonal changes make teenagers the most prone to acne but people from all age groups suffer from acne. Statistics show that more than 50% of women and 25% of men experience acne between the age of 25 – 45 years.

  • Myth: Getting facial regularly will clear the skin of acne

Fact: Facials include massaging the skin with oils and creams followed by using masks to enhance the skin texture. This massage in return activates the oil glands to emit more oil prompting more acne.

  • Myth: Toothpaste can clear a pimple.

Fact: Toothpaste and other household items are not safe on your skin. The fluorides in toothpaste can even worsen acne.

  • Myth: Popping pimples will help them go away faster.

Fact: Popping a pimple may make it seem less noticeable temporarily, but popping can cause it to stay around longer. By squeezing pimples and acne, you actually push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil further into the skin, causing more swelling and redness. Besides popping pimple leaves a dark mark on the skin which usually takes longer to fade off.
